Common Issues and Handling Measures of HDPE Pipes

Common Issues and Handling Measures
Issue Phenomenon: Leakage at Joints
Possible Causes: Poor welding quality (contamination, parameter errors), insufficient cooling, mechanical connection seal ring damage or not tightly pressed.
Handling and Maintenance Measures: Shut down and depressurize. If it’s an electrofusion or hot fusion joint leakage, usually requires cutting off the leaking section and rewelding. Welding under pressure is strictly prohibited. If it’s a flange connection, check and replace the seal ring, and tighten the bolts evenly in a diagonal sequence.

Issue Phenomenon: Local Scratches on Pipe Wall
Possible Causes: Scratched by sharp objects during installation or bumped by stones during backfilling.
Handling and Maintenance Measures: Measure the scratch depth. If the depth is less than 10% of the pipe wall thickness, it can generally be ignored. If the depth is larger but does not penetrate, plastic welding gun can be used for repair. If it has penetrated or the depth is very large, remove the damaged section and replace with new pipe.

Issue Phenomenon: Pipe Deformation
Possible Causes: Excessive external pressure (such as too high load, vehicle rolling over), excessively high temperature (medium or environmental temperature exceeds the pipe material’s capacity), insufficient design wall thickness.
Handling and Maintenance Measures: Investigate the cause. If it’s due to external pressure, reduce the load or reinforce the pipeline (such as adding a sleeve). If it’s a temperature issue, take cooling measures or replace with a higher temperature-resistant material (such as PE-RT). Severe deformation requires replacement.

Issue Phenomenon: Pipeline Blockage
Possible Causes: Deposition of medium impurities, tree root intrusion (water supply pipe), grease solidification (drain pipe).
Handling and Maintenance Measures: High-pressure water jet cleaning is the preferred method, suitable for HDPE pipes. For hard blockages, a pipe auger can be used, but choose a soft spring head to avoid scratching the inner wall. Severe cases may require partial excavation for treatment.

Issue Phenomenon: Ultraviolet Aging
Possible Causes: Long-term exposure to outdoor sunlight.
Handling and Maintenance Measures: Observe if the pipe surface has become powdery or brittle. For sections exposed long-term, apply UV protective coating or wrap with protective layers (such as aluminum foil tape) for protection. New projects should prioritize black HDPE pipes containing carbon black, which have stronger UV resistance.
